My Live Action Adaptations

Dreamworks have acquired the rights to make a live action version of Ghost In The Shell.

If you reacted to that statement with a cold sweat and a brief moment of panic then I totally understand how you feel.  If you shrugged and are now reading this sentence then you've never seen it and if you already knew then I can't believe you didn't tell me.  Don't worry, Dreamworks are probably just going to barbarically mutilate it with dollar-punches and then start giving away free Major Kusanagi toys in Happy Meals.

As if that wasn't bad enough, a remake of Akira is also being planned. Last year, Warner Brothers bought the rights to make two films, each one covering three of the original six manga volumes. Oh yeah, in classic Warner Brothers style, they're moving the setting of the film to "New Manhattan" instead of the original setting of "Neo Tokyo." I can just imagine Tom Cruise in the role of Kaneda riding about "New Manhattan' on his Harley trying to find his friend "Chuck" played by one of the Baldwin brothers.  I wouldn't even be surprised if they rename the movie Jaysus.

I'm just devastated by all this, at least neither of the films are scheduled for release until 2011/12 so at least we have to time to ready ourselves. Someone has already made a limited animated preview of the American remake:
