My Science Fiction Argument

Ah, the refreshing visual treat which is the click of the 'New Post' button. The argument works like this:

In order of preference, from first to last:

  1. Star Trek: Next Generation
  2. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

  3. Star Trek: Voyager

  4. Andromeda

  5. Star Trek: Original Series

  6. Battlestar Galactica

  7. Farscape

  8. Dark Angel

  9. Blake's 7

  10. Anything else at all

  11. Being nearly dead

  12. Star Trek: Enterprise
Enterprise is literally the bottom of the pile. No-one watched it at the time and no-one watches it now, it had a terrible theme tune, a terrible cast, empty plotlines and a horrible visual aesthetic. It even (gasp!) went against Star Trek cannon, a crime punishable by 'set to stun' in some circles. They also ruined the Star Trek franchise forever, no-one will ever trust a new series again.

However I'm informed that the last 2-part episode of Enterprise was actually really good. Not only that, but that Farscape was actually worth watching. I know right, unbelievable. It's like a low budget Doctor Who. Were that possible.

But I retorted, Deep Space Nine is actually good, said with full conviction. Yes it's essentially Eastenders on a space-station, I concur, but it has one sweeping story-arc full of intricate turns and twists, with lovable characters and lots of dramatic 2-parters; the Trekkie's Holy Grail. It was nominated for an Emmy every single year of it's run for makeup, cinematography, art direction, special effects, hairstyling, music (direction and composition), and costumes and also nominated twice for the Hugo award. It was dubbed by America's TV Guide as "the best acted, written, produced and altogether finest" Star Trek series and was featured on the cover ten times, including four special editions dedicated to the series.

So now the challenge is on, at a time when I should be burying my head in work and panicking like my classmates, I'm instead going to spend my time in the presence of these two men:

John Crichton;

And Jonathan Archer;

They even look the same, slimy fucking creeps. Ruined science-fiction forever. However, my insistent assailant has to watch 8 series of Deep Space Nine. With this guy:

Quark;

You made a pretty broad, non-fact based statement about Enterprise. The series was, in my opinion, the best in the franchise, The main reasons for Enterprise not having a 7 year run on television was that it aired at a time when the television industry was changing in the US and the fan base was getting board with Star Trek. There series did have an average viewership in the US in excess of 3 million viewers during its 4 year run and is currently popular in syndication globally, gaining new fans every day.
