Laconian humour, which I'm a great fan, of was first used by the Spartan people. It's a form of very dry wit which reflected the Spartan attitude perfectly. For instance, when Philip II of Macedonia had his crack at taking over Greece he sent a message to the much feared Spartan people saying "You are advised to submit, for if I bring my army into your land, I will destroy your farms, slay your people and raze your city." The Spartans sent back the one-word reply; "If." Both Philip of Macedonia, and later Alexander the Great, then avoided Sparta entirely in their missions to take Greece.
